NASA award
14 October 2010

The JINR staff members V.N. Shvetsov (Laboratory of Neutron Physics), G.N. Timoshenko, and A.R. Krylov (the two latter are of the Laboratory of Radiation Biology), who participated in the working group on the development and fabrication of the Russian-made Lunar Exploration Neutron Detector (LEND) for the NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) have been awarded NASA letters of commendation for the successful completion of the LRO mission.

The main aims of the mission were the global mapping of the Moon, radiation environment exploration, and potential resource (first of all, water ice) prospecting. LEND, which is a collimated neutron detector, is designed for mapping the distribution of hydrogen in the upper (1 m) layer of lunar regolith with a resolution of up to 10 km and for collecting information on the neutron component of circumlunar radiation in the energy range up to 15 MeV. The detector was designed at the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the direction of I.G. Mitrofanov according to an agreement between the Russian Federal Space Agency and NASA. JINR's tasks included the mathematical modeling of the LEND counting response, participation in designing the detector's physical scheme, and preparation and performance of the calibration of the detector samples using natural and artificial neutron sources and a table simulator.

The rocket with the satellite was launched on 18 June 2009; on 15 September, LEND started mapping the lunar surface to search for water ice. In particular, local high hydrogen concentration areas were found in the neighborhood of the crater Cabeus near the Moon's South Pole. Later, two NASA spacecraft struck at the lunar surface in that area; the dust cloud raised by the hits was studied. The analysis of the data of this experiment revealed the presence of an observable amount of water in the cloud.

NATO Advanced Training Course 'RADIPER'
25 October 2009

On 23 October 2009, the NATO Advanced Training Course on Rapid Diagnosis in Population at Emergency and Risk 'RADIPER' was closed in Krakow, Poland. The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was represented by young members of staff of the Laboratory of Radiation Biology: Oleg Belov, a research fellow, and Elena Baranova, a laboratory assistant.

Brief information on the NATO advanced training course 'RADIPER'

Rapid Detection of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) agents through chemical or physical dosimetry is usually precised but not always available. In such circumstances, rapid diagnosis with retrospective biological dosimetry can be crucial. Various methods of biodosimetry via the DNA and cytogenetic damage and their possible short and long term health effects on potentially exposed members of the population at risk were the main aims of the NATO Advanced Training Course on Rapid Diagnosis in Population at Emergency and Risk 'RADIPER.' As a result of violence, misfortune accident or any hostilities, inhabitants can be potentially exposed to hazardous chemicals or high doses of ionizing radiation that could cause direct clinical effects within days, weeks or years. Acute exposures to genotoxic agents can also result from natural environmental factors, non-specific contamination, the occupational environment, industrial discharges, and industrial accidents. A modern toxicology investigates a wide array of both old and new health hazards. Many methods are now available for monitoring humans and measuring genetic damage and other changes in macromolecules and body tissues. The RADIPER NATO advanced training course concentrated on the commonly measured biomarkers (chromosome aberrations; micronuclei; DNA damage), but others (p53 protein levels; metabolic genotypes) was also addressed. Distinguished scientists from the fields of toxicology, molecular biology, cytogenetics and epidemiology will present and discuss the state-of-the-art knowledge and recent developments in biological dosimetry and monitoring of population at risk.Rapid Detection of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) agents through chemical or physical dosimetry is usually precised but not always available. Modeling of the induced mutation process in bacterial cells
O. Belov, E. Krasavin, A. Parkhomenko
A mathematical model of the mutation process in bacteria Escherichia coli induced by ultraviolet radiation is developed. Our model is based on the experimental data characterizing the main processes of the bacterial SOS response. Here we have modeled a whole sequence of the events leading to the fixation of the primary DNA lesion as a point mutation. A quantitative analysis of the key ways of the SOS mutagenesis was performed in terms of modern system biology. The dynamic changes of the basic SOS protein concentrations and the process of the translesion synthesis by the modified replication complex are described quantitatively. We have also demonstrated the applicability of the developed model to the description of the mutagenesis in individual genes. As an example, an estimation of the mutation frequency in E. coli's lacI gene is performed. The approaches to modeling of mutagenesis induced by ionizing radiation with different linear energy transfer are developed.

Evaluation of the influence of some factors on γ-induced apoptosis in human peripheral blood lymphocytes
E. Baranova, A. Boreyko, I. Ravnachka

In this work several experiments have been performed to study regularities in the induction of apoptotic cells in human lymphocytes by 60Ño γ-rays at different times after irradiation. Apoptotic index variability was detected in patients of different ages (21 – 62 years). Modifying effects have been studied of inhibitors of replicative and reparative DNA synthesis – 1- β -D-arabinofuranosylcytosine (Ara-C) and hydroxyurea (Hu) – on the kinetics of 60Co γ-rays induced apoptosis in human lymphocytes. It was shown that adding inhibitors results in the apoptotic cell output increasing during the post-irradiation period. Apoptosis induction by 60Co γ-rays in human lymphocytes in different cell cycle phases (G0, S, G1, and G2) has been studied. It was found that the apoptotic cell formation frequency in the beginning of the dose curve increases with the irradiation dose in all the cell cycle stages and then reaches a plateau. The maximal apoptosis output in lymphocyte cells was observed in the S phase.
